| For puppies and beginning
adults, Susan Marett of Purely Positive Dog Training offers a seven
week group class in basic obedience. Classes typically consist of
six to ten handler and dog teams, plus Susan and her assistant. Susan
emphasizes positive reinforcement and gentle leadership. Tracking,
and Canine Acting and Tricks' classes are also part of her class calender.
Our next beginning class will begin on August 8th, with another class starting
in September.
Susan has completed more
than 300 classroom hours apprenticing under professional obedience instructors.

She has trained dogs in group
classes and in owners’ homes in the Charleston area for the past 3 years.
Susan also consults with owners on canine behavior problems, and designs
behavioral modification programs
Some of her past educational
experiences include attendance at the Volhard Training Conference and Instructor’s
Camp in upstate New York, and the Dog’s Camp, hosted by Catherine Mills
in Asheville, North Carolina for the past two years. She has attended
annual conferences hosted by the Association of Pet Dog Trainers, as well
as numerous training and behavior seminars.
Susan has also spoken at
local kennels, veterinary hospitals, and shelters on animal behavior.
She has made several appearances on “The Pet Docs” radio show to answer
questions on canine behavior. Recently she was asked to speak at
the National Mastiff Specialty in Atlanta. Susan has also been invited
to give a seminar at the Eden Alternative Conference (an Eldercare Organization)
this fall. ·
She is a member of the Association
of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT), American Dog Owners Association (ADOA),
German Shepherd Club of Charleston, and Southern States Rottweiler Rescue
(SSRR).
Susan is currently competing
in agility with her Rottweiler, Frances. She is looking forward to
a new agility career for her Jack Russell, Alphie, and her mixed breed,
Otis. Otis is also a certified therapy dog.

Classes
Kinderpuppy Class
Taught by Susan Marett
Kinderpuppy Class is for
puppies between the ages of 12 to 20 weeks*. Puppies are taught basic
obedience commands such as sit, down, stay, leave it, wait at the door,
watch me, walk on a loose leash, and come when called. Socialization
is encouraged with both people and other puppies.
Our trainers will be on hand
to offer advice on housetraining, bite inhibition, jumping up, and other
inappropriate behaviors. Training is accomplished through positive
reinforcement.
Classes are one hour per
week over a seven week period. Please do not bring your puppy to
orientation. The cost is $85.00.
*Toy breeds may be admitted
to Kinderpuppy Classes at any age.

Companion Dog Class
Taught by Susan Marett
Companion Dog Class
is a great introductory class for positive training for dogs six months
of age or over. Dogs may be graduates of Kinderpuppy
Class, or have no previous formal training. Dogs are taught good
manners and basic obedience commands such as sit, down, stand, stay, wait,
leave it, watch me, walk on a loose leash, come, and hand signals.
People are taught how to be clear and concise.
Classes are one hour per
week over a seven week period. Please do not bring your dog to orientation.
The cost of the class is $85.00.
Canine Good Citizen
Class
Taught by Kathy Chisholm
This class will prepare
dogs and their owners to take the AKC Canine Good Citizen test, with the
test given at the end of the six weeks. Dogs should have the fundamentals
for the following commands: Sit, Stay, Down, Come and Heel.
We will also work towards
your dog being reliable around strangers, other dogs, sudden movements,
loud noises and other unusual things! Come and have fun with us as
we prepare for the CGC test! We do begin working with the dogs on
the first meeting. The cost is $85.00.

Ring Ready Class
Taught by Bonnie Laidlaw
The Ring Ready Class
is presented for the handler who is headed for AKC obedience competition.
The seven week class will cover all the exercises included in AKC Novice
obedience, what is expected of the handler, what the judge will be looking
for, and detailed understanding of AKC regulations.
If your dog is heeling quietly
on a loose leash, has a reliable recall, has no problems with dog or people
aggression, and has a good understanding of the stays, you and your dog
should be able to use this class to build the accuracy and precision required
of AKC obedience competition. We do begin working with the dogs on
the first meeting. The cost of the class is $85.00.
Agility
Introduction to Agility
Taught by Susan Marett
Agility is an exciting sport
that tests teamwork between handler and dog as the dog runs under, over,
or through a variety of obstacles. This class will introduce targeting,
individual obstacles, and handling skills. Dogs must be at least
six months of age, and have had previous obedience training to attend.
We do begin working with the dogs on the first meeting. Classes are
one hour per week over a six week period. The cost is $85.00.

Novice Agility

Are you hooked yet?
Novice Class will continue with basics learned in the Introductory Class.
We will concentrate on improving your dog’s proficiency on equipment.
We will also begin learning obstacle sequences and mastering shorter, complex
ones. In addition, we will learn basic handling skills for maneuvering
your dog around a novice course. This class is six weeks in length.
The cost for the class is $85.00.
Intermediate Agility
Taught by Derrell
and DeAnna Stover
This class will continue
to polish you and your dog’s skills and proficiency on each obstacle —
at full height and from every angle. You will learn more advanced
handling techniques: types of crosses, body positions, and cues.
Distance work will also be introduced. This class is six weeks in
length. The cost for the class is $85.00.
Advanced Agility
Taught by Derrell
and DeAnna Stover
Have the agility bug?
If you are ready to test you and your dog’s skills in agility competition,
this is the class for you! Dogs will perform longer and more complex
sequences. You will practice advanced handling skills and maneuvers
aiding you in the successful completion of USDAA Starter/Novice, or AKC
Novice/Open courses. We will also learn how to evaluate courses
and develop appropriate handling strategies.
Rules of various agility
organizations and ring etiquette will be discussed: so that you may enter
the ring with confidence. In addition, we will introduce agility
games commonly played in competition. Distance work will be further
developed. This class is six weeks in length. The cost for
the class is $85.00.

Additional Classes
Therapy Dog Class
Taught by Jane Hirsch
n this six week course,
you will find out what therapy dogs do; learn what’s involved in becoming
a therapy dog team; and practice behaviors helpful during therapy visits.
All activities will prepare you and your dog for the test required by Therapy
Dogs Incorporated (TDI), a national therapy organization, and for becoming
a successful therapy team. We do begin working with the dogs on the
first meeting. The cost is $85.00.
Clicker Training Class
Taught by Jane Hirsch
This 4 week introductory
clicker class will help you get started in clicker training your dog.
Learn how to work with your dog like the professional animal trainers:
using operant conditioning. We will discuss and practice shaping,
luring, and targeting. You will teach your dog desired behaviors
and tricks the fun, positive way! Clicker training is a great tool
for behavior modification, obedience, agility, flyball, and any other activity
you and your dog would like to pursue. The class is appropriate for
both puppies and adults! We do begin working with the dogs on the
first class. The cost is $50.00.

Canine Acting and
Tricks
Taught by Susan Marett
This class teaches
many fundamental skills such as “touch,” “foot,” and “take it,” as well
as more traditional tricks such as “Bang You’re Dead,” “Say Your Prayers,”
and “Rollover.” Besides building your dog’s repertoire, your dog
will become more responsive and more focused. You will also learn
how to motivate your dog and how to shape his behavior.
Please bring a small mat
for your dog, lots of soft treats, a clicker and/or target stick (if you
have them), a four or six foot lead, and a plain buckle collar. We
do begin working with the dogs on the first meeting. Classes are
one hour per week over a seven week period. The cost is $85.00.
